This week’s caking barring took us to the spacious streets and faux German town homes of Agoura Hills, where we were visiting our lovely lovely friend Marcella post-wisdom tooth surgery. After apologizing for not being worse off when we arrived for what was supposed to be a soley stay-in Drew Barrymore movie night of recovery, Marcella eagerly signed on for venturing out with Chrissy and me– this time armed with a blueberry pie.

The Crown and Anchor is an old-timey looking pub in what appears to be a fairly new strip mall, which is both disarming and magical. We ordered ginger ale that tasted like diet tonic water, but our bartender not only gave us our drinks for free, but came OUT of and AROUND the bar to ask for a piece of pie, proving that this whole gameplay is working. (And then he came back to say thank you after finishing it. Somebody was raised right. Clearly.) We also gave the security guy a piece of pie, (who asked if the pie was laced with anything– he was just doing his job), and some friends sitting nearby. But none to those people that reminded me eerily of middle school by their sloppy romantic comedy dancing. Geez.

Things I learned this week:

(1) Pie will be just as enthusiastically welcomed and devoured and appreciated as cake

(2) Never assume the guy you’re interested in talking to is with his girlfriend– it might just be his sister

(3) Your bartender may not be a drinker, and offer this information up when you order a soda as a way to bond

(4) Your hair can be dirty and boys still want to talk to you

(5) Why is everyone asking if I just bake things and hang out in bars? Are they catching on?!!!

This week I used Trader Joe’s pie crust, and this recipe for blueberry pie filling. I didn’t even use crust on top because I only had enough left over for the bottom– it still turned out so good (and so gosh darn easy). People flipping love pies.
